HOW TO BUILD A MINIATURE TREE - Pine Trees

These five simple steps will show you how to make a miniature pine tree using Sweetwater Scenery's Pine Tree Kit. Using these procedures, you can re-create realistic model conifer trees.
Sweetwater Scenery Pine Tree Kit Includes:
- 5 Natural Wood Trunk Structures (nailed)
- New - Easy to separate: Pine Tree Foliage Pad
- Custom Color Mix using ASMI Ground Foam
- StyroFoam Building Pad
- Full Step by Step Instructions with Photos

Other Supplies Needed:
- Scissors
- Spray Adhesive or White Glue
- Aqua Net SuperHold Unscented Hairspray
- Plastic Cup
STEP ONE - Separating Foliage Pad
Separate the foliage pad material into ultra thin, rectangular pieces. The size of these “ pieces” should range from 2 inches to ¾ of an inch. It is very important to thin out the small “pieces” by pulling the fibers apart. You want to keep the fiber as thin as possible. A single pine tree will have 15 to 18 “thinned out pieces” made from the foliage pad material. Note: When making the 4”-6” trees, you should use fewer (9 to 12 pieces) and slightly smaller diameter “pieces” (1 1/2” to 3/4”)..
STEP TWO - Applying Foliage Pad to Trunk Structure
Insert one of the pine tree trunks into the Styrofoam. (Note: Use caution when placing the nail through the Styrofoam, it may protrude out the bottom). Apply white glue to the trunk structure with a small paint brush. Skewer foliage pad “pieces” on to the trunk. Place the lower “pieces” off center. On the upper third of the tree, the “pieces” should be more centered. Finish the top by applying white glue on the tip of the tree. Using a small bundle of foliage pad fiber, approximately ½” to ¾”, place vertically on the glued tip. After the white glue is set-up, foliage can be strayed with Aqua Net Super Hold Unscented Hairspray. This will stiffen and bond the foliage together. Allow to dry before trimming.
STEP THREE - Trimming the Foliage Pad
Using scissors, trim wayward strands on the ends and between the individual foliage “pieces”. Cut any loops or curves on the edges. The goal is to produce straight, loose ends. This initial step of trimming is important, as it gives the tree its overall shape.
Also, trimming before the ground foam is placed saves on foam.
STEP FOUR - Applying Ground Foam
Spray the foliage “pieces” with Aqua Net Super Hold Unscented Hairspray, this will adhere the ground foam. With adequate ventilation, spray foliage pad from underside and top until foliage pad is thoroughly coated. Place the ground foam into a plastic cup and sprinkle a small amount of foam on the on the underside of the tree. Place something under the area to catch falling foam so that it can be reused. Turn tree over and repeat procedure on the top. Use foam sparingly. Use just enough to hide the fibers. Allow to dry.
STEP FIVE - Final trimming
Finish your tree by cutting the obvious strands. Trim the tree into its final shape. Spray lightly with hairspray to set the foam and fibers. Plant your tree and enjoy!
